Apprenticeships

Investment in the latest machine tool technology runs hand-in-hand with sustained investment in the next generation of engineering skills – the one is of little use without the other.  JJ Churchill is proud to have run an un-interrupted apprenticeship scheme for over 73 years, and although the content of apprenticeships has evolved over this time, apprentice-trained machine operators and engineers remain core to supporting our technical competence.

 

JJ Churchill's Mechanical Advanced Apprentice Training Plan is a four year apprenticeship with options to progress onto Technical Support NVQ Level 3 and HND or Degree.  JJ Churchill works very closely with Midland Group Training Services (www.mgts.co.uk) based in Coventry, but we are also linked with other local colleges, for instance in Leicester and Hinckley, depending upon where an apprentice lives.  For your first year you will start by attending college full-time and then in the second and third years are based at JJ Churchill with one day a week back at college.  Fourth year, and any subsequent progression is tailored to personal development plans.

 

In the first three years, apprentices may be based in the Tool Room, in the Maintenance Department or directly in the machine shop environment, depending on the skill sets the company is looking to develop and the aptitude of an applicant.  Safely acquiring a broad set of new skills is the company’s key objective and this is supported by each apprentice having a senior mentor whom they work alongside. Subsequent development could be in almost any facet of the business from engineering, through to production, non-destructive testing and metrology.

 

Once completing their apprenticeship, many employees have gone on to further academic achievements with HNC, HND and degree-level qualifications and importantly, in terms of career progression, most of our engineering team and senior management have come through the apprenticeship route.
